If you’ve ever been to the waterfront of the Navy Yard-Ballpark neighborhood, you’ve hopefully seen the amazing Diamond Teague Park, Yards Park, and Navy Yard Riverwalk trail that span the northern edge of the Anacostia River. Unfortunately, this area is also home to large amounts of washed-up and washed-in trash and debris, which many people have asked about helping to clean up. Here’s your opportunity!
On Saturday, August 17 from 10am to 12pm, we’ll be down at Diamond Teague Park cleaning up the area around the new Ballpark Boathouse kayak rental — then we’ll gather at the Earth Conservation Corps building and boardwalk on site for lunch! This cleanup is sponsored by Commissioner David Garber, Earth Conservation Corps, Ballpark Boathouse, Gangplank Marina, and Groundwork Anacostia.
- What we’ll provide: gloves, tools, trash bags, water (and waders, if needed, though we’ll be at low tide).
- What you should bring: reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and wear clothes and shoes/boots that can get dirty (long pants are recommended).
- How to get there: the Navy Yard-Ballpark metro station is three blocks north of the park (from M Street, turn south onto 1st Street SE); there are Capital Bikeshare stations at 1st & N SE, 1st and K SE, and M & New Jersey SE; there is also personal bike parking at the Earth Conservation Corps historic pump house building at the park; walk; finally, there is plentiful street parking along 1st Street SE and Potomac Ave SE.
